The logo draws inspiration from a variety of sources, one of the most significant being the works of Petr Lubarda, a renowned Montenegrin artist of the 20th century. His depictions of Montenegro’s geographical features, such as mountains, the Adriatic sea, and rivers, serve as a cultural backdrop for the logo’s design.

The second is the symbolism of the letter M, which is found here in several instances, from the word for a mountain in Italian and Latin (Monte), from which the name Montenegro (Black Mountain) comes, to the fact that the letter M is the only unchanging letter, whether in Latin or Cyrillic, and the word museum, which is international and the only word in the name that is the same regardless of language or a script.

The characteristics of Lubarda’s work are rather abstracted and reduced to contours that can be viewed as mountains, waves, or the letter M simultaneously. Another characteristic of Lubarda’s works is often organic or irregularly geometric frames inside which most of the motives were placed. The secondary solution uses such an irregular frame, while the primary solution uses a simple square frame to further abstract and modernize the logotype.
